How To Change Magic Mouse Battery? (Step-By-Step Guide)

Do you have a Magic Mouse from Apple that is not working as well as it should? When that happens it is probably time to change or recharge the battery depending on the mouse you have.

In this article, we share with you how to change or recharge the batteries in your Magic Mouse. We also show you how to check the battery status of the mouse so you can recharge or change the batteries before they completely run out.

What is Apple’s Magic Mouse?

The Magic Mouse is a wireless mouse designed to be used with MacBooks and iPads. They are battery-operated, wireless devices with a multi-touch surface and you can perform several actions with them such as scrolling through documents or swiping from one web page to the next.

How to Change The Battery

If you have a Magic Mouse with replaceable batteries, follow the steps below to change the batteries in your mouse.

Step One

Turn the mouse over. On the bottom of the mouse, you will see the battery compartment and the On/Off switch. Turn the mouse off by sliding the On/Off switch down. As you do this, the green track will disappear.

Step Two

Once the power is off, push the tab down on the battery cover. Slide the tab down from the bottom toward the rear end and the cover will pop up. If it doesn’t pop up, use a thin object to pry it up while you hold the tab down.

Step Three

When the cover is up, pull it away from the mouse. You will now see two AA batteries in the battery compartment. Remove the batteries using either a thin object or your fingernails to pry the battery up and out from either end. Note that you should not use sharp metal objects as they can puncture the battery.

Step Four

With the old batteries removed, place your new batteries inside the battery compartment. Ensure you place them correctly. The positive ends should face the front of the mouse and the negative end the rear. It is recommended that you use high-quality replacement batteries to get the best out of your Magic Mouse.

Step Five

Once the batteries are in place, replace the battery compartment cover. Align the slot on the cover with the black tab on the mouse. Push the bottom part of the cover gently and the cover should snap back into its place.

Step Six

Now you can turn your mouse back on. When you slide the On/Off switch back up, the green track should reappear. You should also see a small light come on in the top-right corner to signify that the mouse is ready to use. For a visual guide on how to change the batteries, you can check out this video.

How to Recharge Magic Mouse Battery

If you have a mouse with rechargeable batteries, the steps below will guide you through the recharging process. The Magic Mouse is sold with a charger but if you cannot locate it, some iPhone chargers will also work. The iPhones with a compatible charger include 5, 6/6 Plus, and 7/7 Plus.

Step 1

Turn your mouse over to locate the charging port. You should see it on the bottom end of the underside. Plug one end of the charger into your mouse’s charging port and the other end into a power source.

If you would prefer to use your Mac to charge your Magic Mouse, pull the lightning cable gently out of the power adapter and plug it into a USB port on your computer.

Step Two

Leave the Magic Mouse to charge for at least one hour. Depending on the battery status before you plug your mouse into the charger, this should give you, if not full, at least almost full charge. Note that your mouse will charge faster if you connect it to a wall socket rather than to your Mac’s USB port.

Replacing Batteries in Magic Trackpad

If you have a first-generation wireless trackpad instead of a mouse, it will have replaceable batteries. If you have a Trackpad 2, then you can recharge using the same steps as with the mouse. Here are the instructions for replacing Trackpad batteries.

Step One

You will need a coin to open the battery compartment. Insert it in the indentation on the compartment. Turn the coin counterclockwise. Keep turning until you can remove the cap covering the battery compartment.

Step Two

Tilt the Magic Trackpad to slide the batteries out of their compartment. Now you can insert the new batteries with the positive ends first.

Step Three

Once the new batteries are in, replace the cap. Turn it clockwise. Finish by using the coin to tighten the cap in its place.

How to Check The Battery Status

If your mouse has rechargeable batteries, it is better for the battery health not to let them discharge fully. If your mouse uses replaceable batteries, you want to change them before they are fully depleted and you can no longer use your mouse.

To change or recharge your batteries in time, you can keep an eye on the battery percentage. Here is how you check it.

Step One

Before you start, ensure the mouse is connected to the Mac you use it with. You can check the connection by moving your mouse. The cursor on the screen should move in response. If there is no response, check that your mouse is turned on and try again.

Step Two

Click the Apple Menu icon on your home screen. When you click on the menu, you will see a drop-down menu. Select System Preferences, which should be near the top of the menu options. Next, click on Mouse.

Step Three

From the Mouse pop-up window, locate the Mouse Battery Level. It should be in the bottom left corner of the pop-up. Look for the battery icon. It will show you the remaining battery life of your mouse.

Conclusion

Changing or recharging the batteries on the Apple Magic Mouse is very straightforward. To improve the battery health of your mouse, keep an eye on the battery status so you can change or charge them before they are completely depleted.
